Participatory, creative and transformative Marine Research_new engaging docu-video out!

A new event recap docu-video titled “Marine Social Research. Present and Future of Science, Creativity and Participation for the Ocean” has just been released by CO>SEA at MEMOTEF Dep. Sapienza University of Rome produced by Raw-News Visual Production Agency (filmed by Federico Fornaro, edited by Federico Fornaro and Giuseppe Lupinacci, scientific coordination Chiara Certoma’), with the support of the Sapienza “Terza Missione” and “Seminars and Workshops” and PartArt4OW.

The video captures the meaning and atmosphere of the workshop Marine Social Research. Present and Future of Science, Creativity and Participation for the Ocean, held at Sapienza University of Rome (MEMOTEF Department) in November 2025. The workshop brought together a wide community of researchers and professionals engaged in participatory and transdisciplinary research on the ocean. The event was promoted within the activities of CO>SEA_Lab – the Collaboratory for Socio-Environmental Ocean Analysis, and connected to European research and engagement initiatives focusing on ocean literacy, participation and creativity.

The workshop highlighted a plurality of methods, techniques and epistemological approaches, ranging from geography — and what the coordinators defined as marine social geography — to oceanography, management sciences, political science, philosophy, territorial governance, physics, marine chemistry, and art-based research practices. This diversity reflected a shared commitment to building knowledge across disciplines, integrating social sciences, natural sciences and creative practices.

The docu-video conveys a strong vision of social research for the ocean, carried out in constant dialogue with other scientific fields, with the aim of fostering positive and transformative change. This approach aligns closely with the objectives of the European Commission’s Mission Ocean and the United Nations Ocean Decade, particularly with regard to Challenge 10, which focuses on transforming humanity’s relationship with the ocean.

The health of our Ocean is the foundation for equitable and sustainable global development. In response to the UN Ocean Decade (2020-2030) and the EU Starfish Mission, this workshop brings together researchers to define “the science we need for the Ocean we want.” The event was hosted at Sapienza University of Rome, within the MEMOTEF Department, and was coordinated by Professor Chiara Certomà. This short documentary explores the emerging “Oceanic Turn” in social sciences—a movement that seeks to deconstruct and redefine our connection to the sea as a material, biological, and cultural space. Moving beyond simple utility, we look at the “assemblages” of human and non-human entities that shape the marine world in the Anthropocene.
